What happened to him? Will he come back?
After the Phillies released him in spring training, Joel Pineiro signed with the Orioles and, after working himself back into shape, was assigned to the Tides. He made two starts in May before getting hurt and going on the disabled list. After three rehab starts in June-July, he underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. He was declared a free agent in the offseason and hasn’t yet signed with anyone.
It’s anybody’s guess (1) when his recovery from the surgery is complete; (2) whether he’ll want to pitch again — he’s 34 and has made over $48 million; and (3) whether anyone will want him to pitch for them in the future.
We should acknowledge that Pineiro won over 100 games in his big-league career, a commendable accomplishment.
UPDATE — Pineiro signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles for 2013.
